Why is it called coffee?
So why is it called coffee, a term with a common root in almost every european language?
Around the year Thousend some turkish merchants exported from Africa, from the area that now belongs to Ethiopia, some beans belonging to a plant from which they obtained a drink called “qahwa”, which means “it doesn’t allow you to sleep”, translated in the turkish “kahve” and then transformed in the italian “caffè”.
It is easy to ask… Why is espresso called espresso? If the ethimology of the word coffee was maybe more known, not all know the reason why the espresso is so called.
In foreign lands there is the convinction that the name comes from the fact that, to make coffee, it is necessary to put it in infusion and then under pressure.
It is not a total mistake, however, the point is that this procedure was not thought to obtain a particularly dense beverage, but to fasten the time of preparation and from this “espresso” meaning fast.
There is someone who can swear that 45 seconds are enough to have a cup of smoking coffee in your hands!
